HAIR COLOR
At Roots, color is a little different than you might find elsewhere. Each client is different, and the priority is to create color that works for you, whatever your routine looks like.
We begin each service with a thorough consultation and hair and scalp analysis, where we can talk about your goals and how to get there. We will also discuss the maintenance level, budget and at home care required to make that goal a reality. Katelyn will work to create a result that meets all your expectations while keeping your lifestyle in mind.
Roots offers a variety of color services including:
-Blonding, from traditional foil highlights to specialty techniques such as balayage and lived-in blonde.
-Gray coverage and gray blending
-Toning and root smudging
- Specialty vivid or rainbow colors
Come in for a consultation appointment to get to know Katelyn and to talk about what kind of color service you need. Consultation appointments are 20 minutes in length and complimentary.
CUTTING AND STYLING
From precision bobs and pixies to soft shags and trendy shapes, Katelyn is happy to cut as much or as little as you're ready for.
Every hair cutting service will include a wash and style to achieve the look you want. The styling portion will include product recommendations and styling tips to achieve the perfect results at home. Each appointment has an extra 10 minutes allotted for consultation and at home recommendations.
Katelyn is also available for styling only sessions. Come in for a relaxing wash and conditioning treatment followed by a polished style for a night out or a long week of work ahead.

Proudly working with Davines Mask hair color for over 12 years, Katelyn believes in the power of the Vibrachrom complex for all coloring needs from covering stubborn gray to toning delicate blondes. Mask Hair Color is low in ammonia, 86% naturally derived, gluten free and full of technology that focuses on the health and wellness of the scalp and hair.
Davines is a well-seasoned line direct from Parma, Italy that offers a luxury feel each time you style your hair. Sustainable packaging, natural scent profiles, and a commitment to only using the best ingredients makes managing your style at home simple.
Design Me Hair care is another Eco-friendly line that focuses on 3 main hair concerns: volume, smoothing, and curl control. A wide range of products with clean scents and easy, color-coded packaging are only some of the reasons this line from Montreal is quickly growing in popularity. Design Me is a brand that focuses on being eco conscious while still delivering results that help you achieve the trendy, modern styles that are in demand.
MEET KATELYN, FOUNDER OF ROOTS HAIR
Roots is more than just a clever name, it means history.
Katelyn was born into the beauty industry guided by her Mom and Aunt, a team of sisters who did hair and nails in a shared salon. This is where she learned the true meaning of a 'beauty parlor'.
At 7 years old, she remembers folding towels, sweeping, and doing shampoos for tips in change. The constant stream of regulars who brought bakery, Avon catalogs and made the salon their home were what Katelyn enjoyed most about her time with her family in the shop.
"I remember a wall of hooded dryers with head shots of Hollywood Stars hanging above, and the ladies under them reading magazines and talking. The good smell of cherry-almond shampoo and hairspray. It was the most interesting place I could imagine."
The uniqueness of each stylist also intrigued young Katelyn, as some were glamorous and flashy, others quiet and reserved. Despite their differences they all shared one thing in common: their pride in their work.
"Each of them was fabulous in a different way, but they all had a deep sense of connection and dedication to their clients and the work they produced. It was its own community."
This sense of personal connection is what made Katelyn attracted to the industry, specifically the client experience.
Katelyn became a licensed cosmetologist in 2009 and spent the beginning of her career apprenticing in a small, corner salon full of seasoned stylists she was able to observe and learn from.
The salon infused modern technique into a family-oriented salon, with clients ranging in age and taste.
"I was an 18-year-old girl with a nose ring and a purple mullet working in a small suburb, it took a lot of bravery to earn clients in that environment and stand behind my skills."
She credits learning from the old-school for teaching her to focus on what she was best at, and how to apply it to a real-life clientele.
Katelyn still works on some of the clients she gained in her apprenticeship today.
To further explore the industry, Katelyn became a state-certified makeup artist in 2011. Her certification led to the opportunity to do special-effects makeup for publications and amateur films, including a short film that was screened at a film festival and a nomination for RAW Chicago Artist of the Year. Through all the roles she has had, including being a Davines color and haircare educator, an in-salon education director, and an aspiring visual artist one thing stayed the same: her love for hair color and hospitality.
After deciding to refocus on that passion for in salon work, she eventually entered to her first independent chair ownership in 2016, where Roots Hair was born.
With 15 years of experience behind her, Katelyn decided it was time to do things differently and cultivate an environment where hospitality is just as important as the hair.
Roots Hair proudly became Roots Hair Parlor in 2023.
Conveniently located in Downers Grove, she saw the opportunity to offer a different kind of salon experience. One that allows for privacy, comfort and more one-on-one time with each guest. From adjustable lighting, a variety of hot and cold drinks, the option to chat or just relax to music, phone charging station to a gel-lined shampoo bowl, there isn't much that can't be done to ensure your comfort.
Positive energy, inner peace, and looking as great as you feel. The experience you can expect at Roots Hair Parlor is a unique one, where you don't feel like just another client in a chair. You will feel like you're walking into the home of an old friend that you can't wait to spend some time with.
When Katelyn isn't behind the chair, she is traveling (especially to California, her favorite destination), enjoying film, experiencing the arts and collecting tattoos. She has collected a tattoo from almost every state she's visited!
The average weekend for her is spent with her boyfriend, dog, three nephews and new niece or enjoying time alone reading and making art.
She hopes to spend the next years of her career fine tuning her services and expanding her educational background to add more wellness-based services to her menu, and eventually include Reiki healing and aromatherapy.
Her personal goals include finishing her 1970s apartment in era-correct decor, learning to paint portraits in oil paint, and putting new pins in her travel map.
